11th Advertising Film Production Workshop:

  • The presenter of the 6th APCP Awards is… ¡TOPacio Fresh!

“Mum, I want to be an artist!” Surely this phrase would be shouted to the four winds by our protagonist of this week. Today she can say that what she dreamt of in her day has come true. The woman we are talking about is a gallery owner, singer, actress and dancer. A fully-fledged artist and a TOP woman! This year she repeats and returns to be the presenter of the 6th APCP Awards Ceremony… Topacio Fresh. As what we say defines us, today we reveal Topacio’s answers to these 5 questions…

1. You are an art lover, what does it mean to you? How did your love for art and more specifically for contemporary art come about? Artists that inspire you?

I’m from Rosario (Argentina) and it’s a city of great artists, so visits to museums were part of my leisure and recreation. I realised that I liked to accompany artists in their creative process and it is a way of being in all their phases, from the thought to the creation of the work, which led me to get involved in cultural management, presentation of projects and later, in 2008, with the creation of my art gallery “La Fresh Gallery”. I specialised in curating video art, I am passionate about photography, Robert Mapplethorpe was one of my great queer references; also artists like Basquiat, who come from a marginal side of society and reach the top; and, of course, I was always attracted by the glamour of Warhol’s Factory. In addition, I always felt challenged by profiles of Latin American artists, not only through contemporary art, but also through music and poetry.

2. You have been part of videos (e.g.: “La mano en el fuego”) and you have had other jobs related to this artistic world… Is there any one that has marked you especially?

Working with artists like Alaska and Nacho Canut (Fangoria), being able to have been with them for 10 years, was not only a wonderful gift, but also a school of infinite knowledge, for which I will always be grateful. I think I’ve been one of the people who has been in the most video clips with Fangoria, and I couldn’t choose just one, but I always prefer the ones made by the great Juan Gatti.

3. Do you think art is sometimes used to escape from the world?

Of course I do, I always say that art saved my life on many occasions, it helped me to escape from a lot of situations in which I felt alone and misunderstood. With time I was able to appreciate that those situations would turn me into a unique and precious being, and I owe that to art.

4. What message would you give to young people who dream of becoming artists?

To be an artist is to be a dreamer, a creative person, a person who shapes their ideas; that they should not stop pursuing their goals and dreams, although it is a very inconstant job because of the subjectivity that underlies art. In these times we have to include other tools apart from the work: the artist’s personality, how he or she deals with society, the diffusion in social networks, and also understand the art world as a great network of communication, and that within that network each figure has his or her importance: artists, gallery owners, museum directors, cultural managers, collectors, etc.

5. You repeat as a presenter at the APCP Awards, are you looking forward to it?
I was looking forward to this question, the answer is 100% yes. I have met some wonderful creatives and I love being part of this family.

Art is not only an escape from the world. Sometimes it is also capable of saving lives. A reflection that Topacio leaves us with and that reminds us of a quote by the playwright Bernard Shaw: “Without art, the harshness of reality would make the world unbearable”. We are looking forward to seeing Topacio Fresh again in Valencia presenting the APCP awards! If names are related to who we are, she is definitely TOP.
