The Madrid City Council, in collaboration with the Community of Madrid and with the support of the Ministry of Culture, has promoted Madrid to be part of the Unesco list, which includes the Paseo del Prado and the Retiro Park.

The urban complex where the Retiro Park and the Paseo del Prado are articulated enters the World Heritage list, with more than 1,200 unique locations. The decision, taken this Sunday with the unanimous agreement of the organism, implies the registration of the 49th Spanish milestone.

The ambassador of Spain to UNESCO, Andrés Perelló, has been in charge of defending the project and activating the diplomatic resources necessary to obtain the support of at least two-thirds of the committee, 15 votes in a chamber made up of 21 countries.

The proposal arrived this Sunday at the plebiscite. Perelló was forceful: “What they want from us is Madrid to be a lung, so that by giving that space, other people can breathe. The Prado and the Retiro are a happy union, whose marriage certificate is certified with a cartography of more than three centuries old ”.

The Paseo del Prado and the Retiro Park already aspired to be UNESCO World Heritage Sites in 1992, but the candidacy did not reach the final stage of the process until now.

This news is a great joy and a great opportunity for future projects. At last we will be able to enjoy the most precious locations in our city.
