The Academy announced this morning the nominees for the 37th edition of the Goya Awards, which will be presented on 11 February 2023 at the Palacio de Congresos y Exposiciones FIBES in Seville. In a ceremony attended by Fernando Méndez-Leite, president of the institution, and under the supervision of the notary Eva Fernández Medina, the actresses Blanca Portillo and Nora Navas, winners of the Goya in 2022, were in charge of revealing the candidates for the 28 categories.
With 17 nominations, As bestas is the film with the most options, followed by Modelo 77, with 16. For their part, Alcarràs and Cinco lobitos have 11 nominations each, while Cerdita and Los renglones torcidos de Dios are up for six statuettes each.
Carla Simón’s ‘Alcarrás’, Rodrigo Sorogoyen’s ‘As Bestas’, Alauda Ruiz de Azúa’s ‘Cinco Lobitos’, Pilar Palomero’s ‘La maternal’ and Alberto Rodríguez’s ‘Modelo 77’ will compete for the Goya for Best Film.
The Goya for Best Director will be between Carla Simón, for Alcarràs; Rodrigo Sorogoyen, for As bestas; Pilar Palomero, for La Maternal; Carlos Vermut, for Mantícora, and Alberto Rodríguez, for Modelo 77.
The nominees for Best Actress in a Leading Role are Marina Foïs, for As bestas; Laia Costa, for Cinco lobitos; Anna Castillo, for Girasoles silvestres; Bárbara Lennie, for Los renglones torcidos de Dios; and Vicky Luengo, for Suro. Denis Ménochet, for As bestas; Luis Tosar, for En los márgenes; Nacho Sánchez, for Mantícora; Javier Gutiérrez, for Modelo 77, and Miguel Herrán, for Modelo 77, will fight for the Goya for Best Leading Actor.
Carlota Pereda, for Cerdita; Alauda Ruiz de Azúa, for Cinco lobitos; Elena López Riera, for El agua; Juan Diego Botto, for En los márgenes, and Mikel Gurrea, for Suro, are in the Best New Director category.
In the Best Animation Film category, the films nominated are ‘Black is Beltza II: Ainhoa’ by Fermín Muguruza, ‘Inspector Sun y la maldición de la viuda negra’ by Julio Soto Gurpide, ‘Los demonios de barro (Os demos de barro)’ by Nuno Beato, ‘Tadeo Jones 3. La tabla Esmeralda’, by Enrique Gato and ‘Unicorn wars’ by Alberto Vázquez.
For the first time, all categories of the awards have five nominations.
The president of the Academy thanked Seville City Council, Divina Seguros, RTVE, Caixabank and Rioja for their collaboration with the Goya Awards.
Antonio de la Torre and Clara Lago will present the gala to be held on 11 February in Seville, where the filmmaker, writer, photographer, cartoonist and stage director Carlos Saura will receive the Goya of Honour. Before that, the traditional meeting of nominees will take place on 19 December 2022 in Madrid.
