- An overview of the objectives of the Valencian Community to improve green production.
Last week we kicked off with the first newsletter of the year, talking about sustainable filming in Navarra and the Basque Country. However, the trend towards sustainability is not an isolated phenomenon, as other Spanish autonomous regions have also joined in the aim of building a greener 2023.
One of them is the Valencian Community, which is positioning itself by carrying out several sustainable projects with an environmental focus. In this way, several companies in the industry have collaborated in various projects, building a greener production.
To achieve this end, Valencia Film Office elaborated a series of proposals focused on the Sustainable Development Goals, which will help to improve some aspects:
- Build resilient infrastructure, promote inclusive and sustainable industrialisation and foster innovation.
- Achieve gender equality.
- Ensure water availability, management and sanitation for all citizens.
- Ensure access to affordable, secure, sustainable and modern energy.
- Promote healthy living and well-being at all ages.
- Sustainably manage forests to prevent desertification, halt biodiversity loss and reverse land degradation.
- Sustainable consumption and production patterns.
- Promote sustained, inclusive and green economic growth and decent working conditions.
- Take urgent action to combat climate change and its consequences.
- Care for the oceans, seas and use marine resources for sustainable development.
- Make cities and communities safe and eco-friendly.
- Revitalise the global partnership for sustainable development.
Thanks to this type of action, we can see that our sector is moving towards a greener future, meeting the proposed objectives.
On the other hand, the director of Audiovisuals and Cinematography of the Institut Valencià de Cultura (IVC) agreed to collaborate with Valencian audiovisual associations, which propose informative initiatives. The aim of these initiatives is for professionals in the sector to learn about the environmental conditions of European regulations, which must be met in order to carry out sustainable projects and contribute to the reduction of environmental impact.
In addition, the Institut Valencià de Cultura (IVC) requires a certificate in order to be able to reduce and measure the environmental impact. With these declarations, the aim is to achieve a change before 2024, when such a document will be required.
According to the certificate, productions will be asked to meet a number of requirements, requesting that they calculate and reduce their carbon footprint. This is because one of the main consequences of filming is the use of fuel and energy (there are other objectives in addition to those already mentioned, such as reducing the use of chemical products or avoiding red meat in filming catering).
On the other hand, they add that it is possible to aspire to more sustainable productions and stories, starting with the script. An alternative to achieve this is to look for locations where the environment is not put at risk, while raising awareness among viewers about recycling (for example, by adding containers or other related elements). In addition, they will search for profiles that are in line with these sentences, in order to be able to carry out a more sustainable production.
One way or another, time is advancing and with it the objectives of building a greener production are gaining momentum.

2.Bestours tells us about the first CO2-free transatlantic flight.
A few days ago, our sponsor Bestours offered us a summary of the most relevant news in the sector through its specialised travel newsletter. In it, we were able to learn about the first transatlantic flight without CO2 emissions.
See the original article here and more information in their website. Virgin Atlantic wants to position itself as one of the most environmentally sensitive airlines, so much so that it will make the first transatlantic flight using only sustainable fuel,” they said on their website.
From London Heathrow International Airport in the UK, it will fly to John F. Kennedy Airport in New York, USA, in a Boeing 787 powered by Rolls-Royce Trent 1000 engines.
“As an airline committed to innovation, we are pleased to lead a consortium of companies that wants to operate these 100 per cent emission-free flights across the Atlantic. These flights position SAF fuel as key to decarbonising aviation. Our launch will undoubtedly accelerate the production of SAF fuels,” said Virgin CEO Shai Weiss.
SAF fuel aims to achieve a 70 per cent reduction in CO2 emissions.
