‘Talking to CANADA’ was the closing event for the first day of conferences. During this, Mónica Moro (President of the c de c, and Founder and Creative Director of This is Libre) interviewed Lope Serrano, Director of CANADA.
During the interview they have talked about Serrano’s values, which emerge from artistic creativity and working passionately. Serrano said that the most relevant aspect they took into account when they planned the creation of the production company was being devoted to what you do.
From the Director’s perspective sometimes the answer is to look back, specially towards tradition, in order to be able to get to know all that has been done before and acquiring wide knowledge, as well as learning to accept irony. A relevant point when talking about his music videos for Rosalía, with whom he could create and work starting from some ideas, is the familiarisation and representation of some spanish traditions from a new perspective.
He admits he feels like his most authentic self working under the name of Canada instead of his own name. Mainly because he considers it a family and because it has ended up being a brand even if it was not its primary purpose.
‘Creativity is related to freedom, to the ability to not feel bad for not being productive’. To do so, Serrano says it is necessary to be able to decide what you can do inside a system. ‘It is a fight between wishing and reality’. He admits that it is very difficult to be able to do what you really want to do, although he affirms that the budget is not a reason to not carry out a project.
‘I like the harmony better, the pleasing. I would love to film an advertisement that would make people think that it is just like real life’. Adding realistic elements, going from reality to another world, more ethereal and irreal.
Working together is better than working alone’ is a dynamic that seems to work really well for Canada.
