The Great Food Collection 2022 is back, the largest solidarity campaign in our community and the most important food collection operation carried out by the Fundación Banco de Alimentos de Madrid. In 2021, this campaign accounted for 16% of the total food that came into our organisation and 45% of the basic food basket.
After two very difficult years and although we hoped that 2022 would be the year of recovery, the reality is that this has not been the case. We have overcome the pandemic but the problems arising from the war in Ukraine, especially the rise in prices of supplies, fuel and especially food, are not reducing the poverty figures. The economic situation is very tough and the consequence is that the number of people in need of our help has not decreased and remains at the same levels as in the pandemic years. Today we continue to provide a daily meal to more than 182,000 beneficiaries in the Community of Madrid, through 560 charities.
Thousands of people need our help to be able to feed themselves adequately and a new profile of beneficiaries is being incorporated who never needed help before: middle-class Spaniards with children, young immigrants in non-chronic poverty and people who, having stopped receiving help because they no longer needed it, now need it again.
For this reason, this November, La Gran Recogida 2022 is back, aimed at individuals and companies, to collect 3,000,000 kg of basic food baskets: baby food, tinned meat and fish, dried and tinned vegetables, oil, rice, sugar, flour, etc., which will enable us to provide food security to all the people we serve and prevent the lack of stock of such essential products in our warehouses. All the money raised will go entirely to the purchase and free distribution of these basic foodstuffs.
