APCP, in collaboration with Burgos Film Commission, invites you to discover the chapel of San Olav in Covarrubias, available for filming.

From APCP we share with you a log of the trip we made with Burgos Commission to explore the most interesting filming locations in the province.

Among the five partners who participated in the scouting, they all agreed that the Ermita de San Olav was completely striking and impressive, located approximately 2 kilometres from the centre of Covarrubias.

This oratory completely breaks with any traditional image you may have in your head, as unconsciously when you hear hermitage you normally think of a religious building made of stone and wood and located in a place far away from an urban centre. However, St. Olav’s Hermitage does not follow these conventional ideas, as its style is completely genuine and modern, both in terms of container and content.

St. Olav is the patron saint of Norway. This country has a fruitful relationship with the town of Covarrubias, thanks to the marriage between the Crown of Castile, by Philip of Castile, and Norway, by Princess Kristina, in the 13th century. After her death in Seville, the remains of the princess were collected in the Collegiate Church of Covarrubias and in her honour, 8 centuries later, the Hermitage of San Olav was erected.

The place has a main building of irregular geometry of about 200 square metres. Its interior, inspired by Viking ships, is surprising. It also has a tower almost 30 metres high that rises imposingly over the landscape. Both elements, surrounded by the luxuriant vegetation of one of the most important juniper groves in Europe, create a magical atmosphere full of visual possibilities.

To reach the hermitage, you only have to walk one kilometre along a dirt road, which is in good condition. In addition, the Norwegian Princess Kristina Foundation, which manages the site, is very receptive to filming. Despite being a hermitage, the site has been deconsecrated, which makes it much easier to process.
