The 5th Madrid Films by Women Festival closed on November 6 with a total number of 73,715 between in-person venue attendants and online audience.
An edition that has continued to grow with 69 screenings, 13 professional and training activities, 20 in-person venue attendants, 47 industry guests, feature films from 21 countries and a 34% media impact growth from last’s year figure.
As in previous editions, the Madrid Films by Women Festival aimed to make visible the work and point of view of women in audiovisual/film creation through the programming of a national and international selection of fiction, animation and documentary feature films directed by women.
Indeed, during this 5th edition, 69 feature films were screened and 13 professional and training activities took place in the 20 in-person -screening and training-venues. This year the Focus Section was dedicated to the most innovative cinematography from the Netherlands with a selection of 7 films that were shown at the Academia de Cine and in Cineteca Madrid, and which made up the Focus Netherlands section, programmed in collaboration with SEE NL and the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Spain. This year again we had the participation of the online channel FILMIN and the channel on the channel 8madrid TV from the Madrid local chain.
The results from this 5th edition cannot be more encouraging with an audience reach of 73,715 people in the in-person and the online venues. Throughout the 2022 festival edition there have been 5,411 in-person attendants and participants, 4,696 at the screenings -8 SOLD OUT-, 532 at the professional and training activities, 31 at the press conference and 152 professionals in the networking meetings. The festival achieved 2329 online viewers, 7,975 online views on the FILMIN channel and 58,000 viewers on 8madrid TV.
During the 12 days of the 5th edition, directors, producers and other professionals were invited to present their work before the screenings. A great opportunity to receive a first-hand presentation from professionals in the industry and enjoy two weeks with the best films from recent years produced in 21 countries on 4 continents: Argentina, Brazil, China, Colombia, Denmark, Egypt, France, Germany, Italy, Morocco, Mexico, the Netherlands, Portugal, Slovakia, Spain, Sweden, Syria, Turkey, the United Kingdom, the United States of America and Ukraine.
As for the award list for the 2022 Madrid Films by Women Festival edition, the 2022 Professional Career Award was granted by the Programming Committee to the Spanish director Isabel Coixet for her ethical commitment, for her sensitivity to observe and her way of narrating interpersonal relationships, for achieving a significant international projection and for being a filmmaker who has paved the way for the new generation of women directors and that constitutes a Spanish cinema benchmark.
The Mexican Estación Catorce by Diana Cardozo won the 2022 Best Film Award of the International Competition of the Madrid Films by Women Festival. In the Spanish Film Competition, Cinco Lobitos (Lullaby) by Alauda Ruiz de Azúa was the winner of the 2022 Best Spanish Film Award.
Furthermore, the 13 collaborating venues that made up the Parallel Sections showed a varied vision of the international scene of cinema directed by women with a total of 33 titles, including fiction, documentaries, animation and short films, by directors from four continents, most of them awarded at festivals around the world.
The varied and extensive programming of this edition, as well as the guest directors and professionals, attracted media attention, achieving in this 2022 edition a 34% media impact growth from last year’s edition. The Madrid Films by Women Festival has obtained a total of 377 press impacts, an audience of 663,935,133 people and an economic value growth of 29%, which amounts to a total value of €1,565,481.
