Did you know: The EES redefines the border: Europe welcomes a new way of traveling

By October 9, 2025 News No Comments

From October 12, the new Entry/Exit System (EES) will transform the experience of non-European travelers in the Schengen area.

Europe is preparing to take another step towards the digitalization of its borders. As of October 12, 2025, the new Entry/Exit System (EES) will come into force, an initiative of the European Commission that replaces the traditional manual passport stamping with an automated and biometric registration. The image of the stamped seal —a symbol of travel, crossing, and beginning— now becomes a digital code that will mark the transit between countries with greater precision and security.

The EES will store travelers’ entry and exit data, along with their biometric information (fingerprints and facial photograph), which will streamline future travel and strengthen protection at the borders of the Schengen area. This will be a change that will affect those traveling from non-EU or EEA countries who do not require a visa and remain less than 90 days within a 180-day period.

Although the system promises more agile and transparent management, the first few months will require patience. Non-EU travelers should expect longer waiting times at airports, ports, or international stations while authorities and infrastructure adapt to this new paradigm of mobility. The implementation will be progressive, extending over six months to facilitate the transition.

With this advance, Europe not only redefines its borders, but also the way we understand travel: from the physical gesture of the seal to the invisible data record, from manual control to trust in technology. One more step towards an interconnected continent that continues to learn to combine security, innovation, and freedom of movement.
