‘Efecto Llamada’, a project of the Asociación Luto en Colores and the production company Somos5 puts the spotlight on this urgent problem.
According to data from the World Health Organization (WHO), over 700,000 people die by suicide worldwide each year. In Spain, these figures are equally alarming, with suicide being one of the leading causes of unnatural death. In this context, and under the premise that silence does not save lives, but dialogue does, the Asociación Luto en Colores and the production company Somos5 have joined forces to create an audiovisual project aimed at sparking conversation and raising awareness about one of the most sensitive and urgent issues in today’s society: suicide. This joint effort seeks to break the taboo surrounding suicide and create a safe space for open discussion.
As a result of this collaboration, the short film “Efecto Llamada” (“Ripple Effect”) was developed. This 1-minute-and-30-second spot delivers a central message: suicide should not be hidden or silenced. Instead, it must be addressed with empathy and courage, offering tools and visibility to those in need.
On one hand, Asociación Luto en Colores, recognized for its work in building support networks for families and individuals affected by suicide, joined this initiative to ensure that the project authentically reflects the real experiences and urgent needs of the community. The association emphasizes that the key to suicide prevention lies in understanding and action.
“This project has been a gift, and thanks to the professionalism and humanity of the Somos5 team, a spot has been created that encourages us to face a reality affecting thousands of people, with clarity, without fear, breaking taboos and silences, and opening windows of hope. Talking about suicide is naming what exists, because what isn’t named is difficult to address,” says Silvia Melero, creator and coordinator of the Luto en Colores project.
For Somos5, this collaboration is part of its annual solidarity initiatives, which aim to use its expertise and knowledge to support non-profit organizations by raising awareness about various social issues.
“When we considered this year’s project, all the information we saw focused on suicide as a taboo topic that people try to hide, yet it continues to grow. It’s one of the issues that will concern us now and in the future, and we knew we had to do something to make it visible,” says Lidia González, executive producer at Somos5.
