The APCP wants to highlight the value of women in business, who manage their production companies. For this reason, today we dedicate the space to Belén Garau. She is one of the creators of The Local Production Company.
By working in this sector, Belén has pursued her dream all over the world. She was born in Mallorca (Spain) and completed her film training in Los Angeles (USA). Later, she returned to Spain and has been working in Madrid and Barcelona. She started as a production assistant. Although she is no longer on the board of directors of the Balearic Islands service industry association (THE BASE) she has been part of it for many years and has even become president. She is also co-founder and managing director of The Local Production Company.
Belén Garau, creator of: The Local Production Company
The Local Production Company is a full service production company based in Mallorca. Years of experience producing on the island and a deep local knowledge have made this company a great support for your project.
This company was created 9 years ago together with mallorquina’s partner, Chencho Coll. “Both of us working as freelancers, we thought that Mallorca could be a space for a production company with knowledge about the island”, says Belén.
They company got so much trust in them, they had the pleasure of working with brands such as Nestlé, Peugeot, Nike, Mercedes, Telekom, Renault or Marks & Spencer. Any new projects soon? Belén tells us that “as we are purely focused on advertising, whatever is to come is still in the minds or on the desks of the creatives”.
This is a project that Belen is very into it
Belén is grateful for it and still remembers those people who gave her the first opportunities in this sector. And, as she says, “the hardest thing is to get into the wheel”. They saw in her a lot of potential and, undoubtedly, with her effort she has been able to show what she does and loves. And… What does it take to work in this sector? The Mallorcan is clear: “The profiles are very varied, from the creative, to the technical, to the more accountant”. To this question, Belén adds an anecdote… “I remember the first day of class, at the university, when one of the professors told us, if you would like to work in cinema, forget about taking long baths… It made me laugh at the time, but I hope that the new generations see it differently, because it is also very good to reconcile work and family life”.
Belén would not say anything to all the girls who dream of being part of the audiovisual world. She would rather listen to them because, “with today’s technologies, these girls are little content creators from the moment they are born”.
Mallorca is a great filming destination with a solid industry, professional teams of more than 200 freelancers, rental houses, catering companies, casting agencies… Belén has made this Mediterranean island her workplace, a place where she can develop her passion and, ultimately, her life.
We end with a sentence from Belén Garau in which she shows her humility and where she shows how much she loves her work… “More than projects, what has marked me has been the people I have met throughout my life, both admired film directors who I never thought I would meet in the advertising field and friends in the industry who have changed the course of my life”.
