  1. Meeting with the Madrid audiovisual industry – Announcement of the new filming ordinance.

This week we attended the “Meeting with Madrid’s audiovisual industry” organised by the Madrid City Council at Cineteca Madrid.

Madrid redoubles its commitment to the audiovisual sector. The mayor of the capital, José Luis Martínez-Almeida, announced a series of measures aimed at turning the city into a major film set, boosting the audiovisual industry and promoting screen tourism.

Almeida pointed out that Madrid has undergone “an impressive qualitative change in the audiovisual sector in recent years” and, for the first time, “we are one of the ten favourite destinations in the world for the audiovisual industry, and number three in Europe” and, for this reason, he reaffirmed the City Council’s commitment to “generate the best conditions for all those who want to come and transmit the image of Madrid”.

Almeida was accompanied by the Delegate for Culture, Tourism and Sport, Andrea Levy, and the Delegate Councillor for Tourism, Almudena Maíllo, who explained that the City Council has already begun work on drafting a filming ordinance to regulate this activity, facilitate procedures, promote coexistence between neighbours and industry and boost the sector.

In this regard, the mayor also announced a reduction in filming fees for those productions that are located in areas managed by the public company Madrid Destino. The discount will be 100 % for feature films, short films, series, video clips and documentaries; 90 % for entertainment television programmes and 50 % for advertising productions. Depending on the spaces, these discounts can mean a saving for each day of filming of between 1,000 and 10,000 euros.

2. Afterwork Madrid Film Office

Last Tuesday we had the pleasure of attending the first Afterwork ‘Cortamos para…’ organised by Madrid Film Office.

Conceived as a meeting aimed at bringing together Madrid’s audiovisual industry and other companies and institutions linked to audiovisual activity in the city, the Afterworks aim to foster networking and synergies between the sector, promote contact and the establishment of collaboration agreements with Madrid Film Office, promote the city as a centre for audiovisual production, establish a meeting point for creators and producers, promote the measures and activities in support of the audiovisual sector developed by the City Council and publicise spaces that could be used as filming locations.

The first edition of the event, which brought together more than 230 representatives of the industry and related organisations, was attended by the Councillor for Tourism, Almudena Maíllo, who underlined the City Council’s commitment to the audiovisual sector, stressing the importance of measures such as “the drafting of a specific filming ordinance to regulate this activity in all public spaces, a reduction in filming fees for those productions that are located in spaces managed by the public company Madrid Destino or the organisation of meetings such as this afterwork with the aim of bringing together and establishing relaxed working spaces”.

To meet the example, the event was held in Green Patio, a space available for filming, “This space is an old factory that has been recovered and we decided to give it a new opportunity for the events and filming sector. There are 3,000 square metres at your disposal, prepared with the latest technology and with three-phase plugs in all the rooms”, commented Rafael Guerrero, director of Green Patio.

3. Back to Alicante’s Ciudad de La Luz

As we all know, the European Commission has authorised the Ciudad de la Luz audiovisual industrial complex in Alicante to resume filming from July 1st 2022, a decade after filming was banned.

This week the APCP met with Antonio Rodes, director of the Sociedad Proyectos Temáticos, and Pilar Pérez Solano in her capacity as advisor to the complex.

The purpose of this meeting was to inform us of how the situation is progressing and for our part to have the opportunity to explain a little more about our advertising production sector, what our needs are and in this way be able to strengthen ties between both parties so that future projects can move forward.

Progress is being made in preparing a strategic plan to be ready before July 1st 2022 in order to recover film and audiovisual activity.
