The San Sebastián Festival and (H) emen, the association of professional women in the audiovisual sector and the performing arts, will organize a working day during the 69th edition of the Festival.

The goal: to reflect, debate and try to reach agreements on issues related to gender equality. The debate will address different interrelated aspects, which include, among others:

  • the inclusion of professionals in the film industry and, in particular, in film festivals, both of their films in the different sections and in discussion forums
  • the ethical codes of festivals, in particular in the face of accusations of crimes against women
  • the recognition and equality of diverse sexual and gender identities.

(H) emen and the Festival will work together on an agenda that addresses the issues that have generated debate. The conversation seeks not only to build a space for real, open and respectful debate, but also the possibility of reaching public and consensual agreements and commitments on these issues.

The main associations of the State participate and that brings together about a thousand members: AAMMA (Andalusian Association of Women of Audiovisual Media), AMMA (Association of Women of Audiovisual Media of Murcia), DONA I CINEMA (Associació de dones del País Valencià) , DONES VISUALS (Associació Promotora de Dones Cineastes i de Mitjans Audiovisuals de Catalunya), MIA (Association of Women in the Animation Industry) and (H) emen, the Basque association of professional women in the audiovisual sector and the performing arts.

“The interesting thing about this workshop will be, starting from this context of real inequality, to be able to reach compromises in a series of measures for the transformation of our audiovisual sector,” they point out from the Inter-territorial Audiovisual Working Group (GTI).

In addition to this activity, a permanent work table for effective equality will be created within the Festival. Quarterly meetings will be held to discuss the themes of this first day of reflection at the Festival and to advance gradually and jointly.

This workshop  will be part of the Thought and Debate activities, an area created last year by the Festival to become a place for meeting, generating and transmitting knowledge. In dialogue with the different departments of the Festival, this cross-sectional area focuses on the identification of relevant topics, formats and people to lead the debate and develop innovative responses around the main challenges and concerns facing contemporary film culture and the international circuit of festivals.
