  1. The last Gerety Talk of the season on Dutch Creativity

Tuesday 10 May sees the last Gerety Talk of this session on Dutch Creativity.

The participants are:
Inge Ligthart, Partner/Managing Director, Dawn
Anna van ‘t Hek, Director, Halal
Marielle Tolen, Associate Creative Director, Media.Monks Films

Like the awards show, the Gerety Talks series puts some of the marketing and creative industry’s true change agents in the spotlight – and at the centre of the conversation – with the aim of driving progress within the industry on a global scale. The series will bring together agency and brand leaders from around the world to offer a fresh take on leadership.

Inge Ligthart

For more than 30 years, Inge Ligthart has been involved in some of the most impactful campaigns in the Netherlands. After studying economics, Inge started her career at FHV / BBDO, where she rose to partner and managing director. After stints in freelance consultancy, communications management at ING Bank and management at TBWA / Neboko, she moved to the young agency Dawn, which was hailed as the leading independent agency in the Netherlands in 2015.

Inge is a firm believer that brands not only have a commercial role to play, but a role in society and a stance on sustainability. Inge has been (among other things) board member and treasurer of the VEA (Communication Advisors Association), board member of Sire (Responsible Advertising Foundation), member of the Advisory Committee of the Future Order of Public Broadcasting (Culture Council), member of the Advisory Board of the International Documentary Festival Amsterdam and is currently a member of (one of the) advisory committees of the Prins Bernhard Cultuurfonds, which funds initiatives to reduce polarisation in society.

Anna van ‘t Hek

Anna Maria van ‘t Hek is one of the most successful Dutch directors. She has been with HALAL for five years and is thriving in both commercials and documentaries. Yab Yum, for example, took the Dutch documentary scene by storm: “What every excellent documentary should do: leave the viewer with astonishing contemplations” – AD

Anna Maria’s approach is strongly influenced by her experience in documentary filmmaking. Her style is characterised by a sincere passion for people and the ability to get under their skin. At the heart of her work is a burning desire to connect with her characters – ranging from kickboxing champion Badr Hari, to Jaden Smith for G-Star – to create documentary and commercial work that is honest and accessible.

In addition to directing campaigns for companies like Volkswagen and Nike, Anna Maria continues to make documentaries. In 2019, Videoland released the documentary series ‘Badr’, which gives audiences a glimpse into the life of the world-famous kickboxing champion as he prepares for the fight of the decade. In 2021, ‘Yab Yum’, a documentary about the rise and fall of one of the world’s most iconic brothels, was released in cinemas. The film received a lot of attention in the Dutch press and was the subject of several front pages.

Marielle Tolen

With a background in literary studies and philosophy, working in advertising is not seen by everyone as the most logical choice. For Marielle, however, there is a clear connection: the art of telling a story is what she loves about the job; and no matter the client, the brand or the assignment, great work is based on a solid narrative and logic, no matter how funky, weird, clever or cute the creative angle.

Marielle started as a copywriter and then moved into creative, and at Media.Monks she works on many types of projects across different platforms and technologies.

Having worked on digital, experiential and video concepts and creative executions, from AI voice experiences, websites, apps to social campaigns, Marielle now focuses exclusively on cinematic and visual experiences within the dedicated cinematography team.

2. Alauda Ruiz de Azúa, Isabel Coixet and Clara Roquet, at the Academy’s activities in Barcelona

These three professionals are the first guests to be invited to the Film Academy’s activities in Barcelona. The institution kicks off its events with a series of previews and talks aimed at Catalan academics.

The first activity of the Film Academy in Barcelona will be on 9 May, with the preview of ‘Cinco Lobitos’, written and directed by Alauda Ruiz de Azúa. The film was present at the Berlin Festival and was the winner of the last edition of the Malaga Festival. After the screening, at 19:00h, its director and screenwriter, Alauda Ruiz de Azúa and the filmmaker Isabel Coixet (CIMA) will hold a meeting with the audience. The screening has the collaboration of the distributor Lara P. Camiña (BTEAM).

The activities will continue on 23 May with the preview of ‘Costa Brava, Lebanon’, directed by Mounia Akl and produced by Nadine Labaki. The screening of the film will be completed with a subsequent meeting with its co-screenwriter and latest winner of the Goya for Best New Director, Clara Roquet.
